Question: Sometimes I will be having a dream that I can’t breathe and then wake up trying to swallow. I’ve haven’t had it checked out but I bet I have sleep apnoea. My girlfriend has told me that sometimes I stop breathing for up to 30 seconds and she has to bump me so I start breathing again. I’m scared.

I used to have exactly that, I would dream that I was choking. I felt terrible and exhausted every single day for years. After multiple visits to my doctor(GP) trying to tell him that I don’t sleep right and that I think I stop breathing during my sleep, he eventually (after running out of all other ideas) referred me for a sleep study. Sleep apnea was confirmed and I have now been using a CPAP machine for over 3 years. I still feel no where near as awake / alert as I used to many years ago but do feel better with CPAP and no longer have choking dreams !!! I still have appointments at the sleep clinic (NHS England) to try get myself adequately treated (either my CPAP setting still isn’t right or perhaps I need a BIPAP machine). I believe one of the reasons I initially had difficulty “convincing” my GP I had sleep apnea is that I do not fit the “typical” sleep apnea criteria – I’m male in my mid 30’s but I do not have a large neck. I could do with loosing a few pounds but definitely wouldn’t be classed as fat, slim if anything. Keep pushing with your doctor etc if you think you have sleep apnea – it’s better to have a sleep study prove you don’t have sleep apnea than to just live with it. Good luck to anyone reading this.
