Question: My high school classmates and I were all lined up in bright, candy-colored dresses in a street that strongly reminded me of those in Mantua, Italy. It was our 8th grade graduation (although it was my high school graduating class, and we were all the age of seniors in high school). This was an exciting day for everyone, because not only were we graduating from middle school, but we were also all getting married, and to arranged partners from our brother school no less (it was an all-girls school)!
I was standing in line, waiting for my partner to come meet me. As I stood there, I was thinking nervously to myself, “I can’t get married! I’m only 18! I still have to get a job and go to college, establish myself as an individual, and buy fashionable shoes before I get married!” Quite rational. Thankfully, I realized that my intended husband was friends with my friend Lucie. I turned to her and explained my worries, and asked her if she wouldn’t mind explaining to this boy that there would be no marriage for him today. She did, and he and I sat on a picnic bench and watched our classmates process into the banquet hall where their marriages would be taking place. My would-be husband was sort bummed that all of his friends were getting married, and he wasn’t. So, to make it up to him, I patted him sympathetically on the hand and then went into the banquet hall. On each table, there were large bowls of candy (to match the girls’ dresses, of course). I took two large handfuls, and went back outside. I handed them to this boy and said, “sorry we didn’t get married, but here’s some candy.” He was happy with the trade off.
