Question: My grandmother would wake up yelling. I can remember that as a young child as we lived with them for 2 years. I sometimes slept with grandma and it would really scare me.
I had a baby when I was 29 and when she was 5 I too started having night terrors. Spoke to my family doctor and he said it was just stress, don’t worry about it, it will go away. Well it didn’t. We moved from our home to our home up north an hour and 10 minutes from Markham Ontario. Didn’t have as many of these night terrors and then bam on they came. I lead a very wonderful life. No mortgage for 30 years, wonderful husband, great family, owned my own small cottage business. Unfortunately, lost my Dad 2 years later. Had a wonderful Mom and lost her 7 years ago, and that really hit me hard. Being an only child I struggled with the loss of both parents. Our home is built on waterfront property. I love to garden, paint, cook and bake as well as entertain. I love being with my grandsons 10 and 13 years old. Financially we have no problems. So what in the heck is causing all these night terrors for so many years?I have talked to my doctor on a few occasions about this problem. At first she kind of dismissed it until I made an appointment with her for this specific reason and told her that I really need help. She sent me to a sleep study at Orillia Soldiers Memorial Hospital 2 years ago. Guess what happened? I was still wide awake after 3 hours. You
see, I had to be at the sleep centre at 9 p.m. they got me all wired up and layed me down to sleep by 9:45 p.m. I don’t go to bed that early as it is at home, so sleep just wouldn’t happen. I finally got to sleep at 4 a.m. and they woke me at 6 a.m. to get dressed and head for home. Apparently, you can only have (1) sleep study in your life time at this hospital. Perhaps after she said that it worked on me and so I didn’t fall asleep for hours. When I wake, I jump out of bed at the same time calling out my husband’s name who sleeps in the other room. My heart seems like it is going to burst out of my chest. Until my husband comforts me, I am beside myself. It only lasts for a couple of minutes. We can’t travel as I don’t want to embarrass myself in front of others by having these episodes. I also wake most of the times with a severe dry mouth. Will have to ask the pharmasist what I can take for this problem, unless you can suggest something. My cousin recently e-mailed me from her home in Nanaimo, B.C. and told me about the bio-mat and said that she thought this might help me with my night terrors. The price is $1700. for the mat and pillow. That doesn’t bother me. My concern is have you ever heard of the bio-mat helping with this situation. My husband says “hey, give it a try”. What is your take on this one! Would love to hear back from you. Many thanks. Marlene
