Question: I often scream during a dream during the first few hours of sleep. The scream awakens me, often my wife reassures me, and I fall back to sleep. I have had chronic insomnia over the years and for several years took Klonopin. During that time I didn’t have the screaming problem. Recently I take Ambien, but only once in a while, not regularly. I don’t have the screaming when I take Ambien.

I have the night screams also. There is never a dream associated with my fear. I might remember material such as canvas above me. Or plaid material. (I know this sounds crazy. Especially since I don’t sew). This seems to happen about an hour into my sleep.
Over 20 years I’ve had two sleep studies. Neither were conclusive to sleep apnea. (Who can sleep with wires attached and in a strange environment?)
A few years ago the night terrors also involved seeing human shaped forms in my room. At least now I’m not having that. I’ve almost become blasé about all of this. However, I’m so tired all of the time that I know this cant be good for my health.
