Question: My son is 14 months and often sleeps less at night than a new born. We have tried every method we can get our hands on to help him get more sleep. After four sleep books and countless pediatricians telling us that this is normal, we are feeling helpless.
Although our son never slept much, my return to work this year and his start of daycare seems to have made the situation worse. He was experiencing episodes where he was unable to wake himself up and would scream, punch, kick and arch his back. Only a video of one of these episodes got any of the pediatrician’s attention. Night terrors they thought until they realized he was only 14 months. He wakes anywhere from 2-5 times a night and screams. If we pick him up he will sleep in our arms and awaken when laid back down. When we let him cry he will go on for over an hour and not return to sleep. He often wakes for the day at 3 am and will not return to sleep. Usually he will take a 2 hour nap during the day at 12 and wake up happy and play in his crib. What is different at night? We can tell he is short tempered and grumpy most days we guess because he is so sleepy.
