Question: It was the day of my Chem 33 midterm, and I was studying in the sun, reviewing a few final concepts. I glanced at my watch and decided to head out to Cubberley Auditorium for my final to insure that I would get there in time.
It was such a wonderful, warm day and I had time, so at the last moment I decided to walk instead of bike to my midterm. Walking from the west of campus, everything was going smoothly and I was making great time until I arrived at Tressider Union. A tangled mass trees and a humid swamp blocked my way. I attempted to enter, but soon realized that the trees were moving and beginning to enclose around me. Alarmed, I sprinted out of the swamp with the roots of the trees chasing me and trying to grab my ankle. I successfully made it to the entrance only to glance at my watch (which I don’t own in real life) and realize that I had 5 minutes to get to my final.Panicking, I decided to cross through the Oak Room on the second floor of Tressider to avoid the swamp. As I was climbing the stairs up to the second floor, I suddenly realized that they were down escalators and that I was in fact moving nowhere. Suspended between floors I used all my energy to race to the top floor. Exhausted and out of breath, I walked into the Oak Room only to
find myself in a large, high-ceiled anteroom with statues all around me. I quickly walked across the room only to discover that there were four long narrow trails all leading off in different directions. I assumed that the one going straight would take me out into White Plaza so I ran through it. After countless turns and loops I arrived into white Plaza. However, once outside I realized that it was pitch black out. I already knew that it was late in the night, but I glanced at my watch anyways. The time read 10:15 PM. Not only was I late, but the midterm had finished more than 2 hours ago.Depressed, I continued to walk to Cubberley, only to bump into my TA for Chem. Immediately, I told him my whole story and begged to be given an alternative midterm. Yet he only answered with, “Oh, so you’re the girl who hasn’t shown up for section all quarter. I definitely won’t allow you to make-up the midterm”. I tried to reason with him that I had been in every section, but as I thought back I realized that I hadn’t been to any lectures or sections all quarter, in fact I hadn’t even studied for the midterm! I was overcome with shame at my laziness that I had shown and with the shock of this enormous grief and shame I awoke to find that I had my first Chem 33 midterm more than one and a half weeks away.
