Question: This morning upon awakening I sat up with a smile, pleased with myself for having awakened. I sauntered out of bed believing I’d just earned myself a grand prize. I sat down to start putting on my makeup and decided to play over the happy occasion again and again in my head. I decided to think about the grand prize and start fantasizing about enjoying it. As I started to do so, I realized, I didn’t know what the grand prize was that I’d just won. And then I wondered how I could collect my prize that I’d attained in the dream world.
Slowly the pieces started coming together. The dream started to separate from the here and now, but it took some conscious thought and convincing. My dream world and waking world had been successfully melded into a state of intense confusion. I worked backwards from the moment of awakening. What had woken me up? My alarm. But it wasn’t the normal sound of my alarm. I had used my cell phone alarm and had just changed the ringtone the night before, having completely forgotten. In the dream world I had been told by the game show host, whose face now eludes me in my wakefulness, that if I could awaken to the abnormal alarm (of which he had played a sample) before having fallen asleep I would have achieved negative sleep, giving me enough points to win the game show (against competitors I don’t believe I ever saw). I know I was in the lead because I had correctly answered a few sleep related questions, but most importantly because I had had a lucid dream. I remember during the first round of the game show answering a question about negative sleep and realizing that that was simply not a true phenomenon. I remember saying in my dream: that’s not a sleep phenomenon, I must be dreaming…if I’m dreaming and I know it then this is a lucid dream. But before I could take advantage of the lucidity the game show host loudly announced: “correct you are in a lucid dream” next question for 50 points. So I was able to explain away my lucidity, within the structure of the dream; I lost the lucidity and entered back into the reality of the dream.I answered the next questions, all the way up to the final question. At this final question I was presented with an awful catch 22: in order to win the prize I had to awaken and enter the physical world, but the prize only existed in the dream world. Sadly the prize was just beyond my reach. Maybe I can collect my reward another night.
